Energy saving bulbs are a great new way to save on your monthly electricity bill. Guess how long they've been around though? We've had them since the '80's! Hard to believe isn't it? They were very seldom manufactured until lately because of the cost of producing the manufacturing equipment and factories necessary to make the bulbs. Yes, you could have been saving around 50 buck per bulb per year for decades, technically speaking. At least now the bulbs are actually available if you choose to use them. Or depending on what country you're in, you may be using them soon whether you like it or not. The talk is that certain European nations will be banning traditional bulbs in upcoming years.
As far as the environment goes, some see the energy-saving light bulbs as an improvement because it's not as bad of a pollution factor for landfills. The downside is that if you break one of these things then you have a small emergency on your hands. Mercury is highly lethal and will leak out of these bulbs if broken. Just read the instructions very carefully that comes with the bulbs. Have a carefully thought out plan ahead of time so that if a lamp gets knocked over you can quickly take safe action and not freeze up in fear of mercury death. Do not use a vacuum! That will kick the mercury into the air around you. Don't neglect to read the instructions included and you should be fine.
